At some point in business you'll need a new website. If you've done any research, you will have come across WordPress, a content management system (CMS) that powers more than 25 percent of all websites. That's about 75 million websites!
From my own experience, I know that WordPress is a fantastic platform for small businesses. It's easy to use, can be used to create almost any design, and it's great for getting your business found by search engines.
So far, so good -- but what about the cost?
Traditionally, you've got two main choices. You can either build a WordPress site yourself, or you can bite the bullet and pay a developer to create a custom WordPress site for your business. We'll take a look at both these options below, followed by a third, "middle-ground" option that we believe offers the best of both worlds.
This might be a good time to point out that your costs for any website will depend on the scope of the project -- how big the website is. That said, we've assumed you're a small to medium-sized business looking for a professional custom design. You'll need multiple website pages to describe your company and services, and you'll also want a blog, about us page, and perhaps e-commerce functionality.
To give a good idea of price, we've looked at three different sources:
• Post Status, a website aimed at WordPress professionals, suggests that 70 percent of custom websites for average-sized businesses fall into the range of $3,000 and $15,000 when bought from a freelancer, and between $8,000 and $40,000 when purchased from an agency.
• Wpbeginner suggests that smaller sites will cost up to $5,000, but that more complicated and robust business sites might cost as much as $15,000 or higher.
• Elegant Themes, a provider of custom WordPress themes, suggests that most custom WordPress websites will cost between $6,000 and $15,000, but some larger e-commerce sites might cost more.
These three sources all agree that most businesses can expect to pay between about $5,000 and $15,000 depending on the features they require. Of course, this doesn't include ongoing costs, which wpmudev estimates could run from $4,000 per year upwards! Ouch!
The traditional "cheap" route is to develop your website yourself. Because WordPress is so easy to use, this is possible, although you'll never get the same functionality and design as you would from a professional.
At the minimum, you'll need to purchase a domain name (approx. $10) up front, and you'd be well advised to opt for a premium theme (approx. $59). Ongoing costs will just be hosting, plus any subscriptions for paid plugins you choose.
Overall, the price is looking a lot healthier -- until you factor in your time. Learning to create even a basic site will require 20-40 hours of your time, and potentially much, much more if you want something with more features.
The biggest problem comes with the more technical aspects: installing WordPress, figuring out problems with your site when something goes wrong, and ongoing maintenance such as updates and backups. This all takes time, which reduces your time spent billing customers.
We may be slightly biased towards Clicktacular, and YES we do have a financial motive, with good reason. We also could have chosen ANY product or technology, but after looking at nearly everything we decided on WORDPRESS.
